Fall venture to Heenan Lake,East Sierras

About this time in October, third week, we make our visit to Heenan lake to fish for the native Sierra cutthroat trout. This lake has been the Ca. DFG, breeder lake for this trout  for at least 30 some years.I have fished it for about 28 years. If you like BIG fish and don't mind releasing them, this is a fun place.
Until 12 or so years there were cows hanging around and it was fun to watch the round up.The fall colors range from full on to not yet.
Over the years I have been there at different times during it's open time. You can only fish there Fri,Sat,Sun during Sept,Oct.Even with all the restrictions it can be a fun time.
We use our canoe, the wife reads while I fish.Sometimes we have an eagle or two for company, they are fun to watch in there search for fish.
This year we had planned to visit again the last week end but due to the 2+ feet of snow over Ebbetts Pass which has closed it ,I think until spring, so that trip didn't go through.
The color of the aspens was beautiful ,along the route up and over Ebbette Pass. This time of the year they don't fail to impress.

The first of two nice 21", "cuts"

These fish are so special.

Fall trip to Minnesota

wanderthewest/forum.com

We left for our trip east 9 Sept . Our route took us through Wells,Nv.where we spent the night at Angel Creek camp ground.Than through Yellowstone for a couple days of fishing and animal viewing.Mostly bison, the weather was warm and the elk were out in the forest. Next stop was the Sitting Bull camp ground above the Ten Sleep canyon area, had a moose in camp, only one night there as we needed to get to Aberdeen SD.Took a side trip to Devils Tower lots of people but a beautiful area with nice color. After the stop in Aberdeen we headed to our friends in Wanona Minnesota, than with them up to the north shore of Lake Superior for a week of camping at their favorite places.
We had nice weather except for the wind the last couple days, which kept us from using the canoe in some of the lakes.
Our return home part of the trip took us into Hibbing,Minnesota where my grandfather, back in 1913 was a miner there, very interesting to see the open pit mines on the "Range".We spent a night on a lake near the head waters of the Mississippi, had the area all to ourselves.
Heading west on I 94 we stopped for the night at Teddy Roosevelt NP south unit, hadn't heard of the place before but was one of the nicest places we camped. The sites are along the Little Missouri river and there were bison and wild horses roaming the camp ground.
Our next stop was to the Custer Battlefield, this place is awesome, very simple but you get the feeling for the place as you walk and drive through the hills.
We took the back way to Yellowstone and camped two nights at Madison than got lucky and spent a night at Slough Creek,I now see why it's hard to get a site there the place is great. We have always camped at Pebble Creek due to Slough being full.
After Slough we needed to see some moose so headed south to Grand Teton and Gros Ventre camp ground where the moose didn't let us down.A nice bull and mate hanging around the camp.
With our trip coming to an end  we had hoped to stay at Angel Creek again but it was hunting season and all sites were full.Since it was getting late we had to motel it.
Back into the Sierras on hwy 4 and one last night at the new camp ground on Union Lake, which we had watched being improved this summer.
We had a great trip all 6,000 miles of it.The new to us Tundra was such a ease to drive it was hard not to stop during the days drives. We met some great people, saw wonderful places, and just had an all round good time. Frank
